A few weeks ago I was talking with a friend about magazines' lack of coverage of stylish baby-friendly homes.
Then, lo and behold, the very next day the newly appointed Editor in Chief of House Beautiful, Newell Turner surprises us with a perfect red highchair on the cover of his debut issue!
So, this got me thinking: Is the industry onto a new segment trend showing that baby-friendly can be stylish, too? I do seem to get an awful lot of reader emails asking for nursery inspiration recommendations these days...

I'm so obsessed with mini designer chairs these days! I saw an S chair on a smaller scale on a blog few days ago and couldn't help myself but gasp and want a baby right now!
That red against purple is very daring!
I love House Beautiful's new twist of a domestic vacation. They show that young parents can have it all...refined taste AND "impromptu fun". There is no reason to put away the fancy drapes and china, just because a sweet bebe crawler has come into the mix. Real life at it's best. love the cool high chairs, too.

high chairs never looked more chic. i am encouraged to see a movement towards the incorporation of baby/child decor elements into our favorite shelter magazines. the modern mothers are every bit as design savvy as us single women...sometimes even more so. striking that perfect balance of style and functionality should be celebrated :)i especially love kelly wearstler's "room for children." love!

That HB story is divine. And yes, I sure think shelter magazines are more pro "young families with babies" in the last few months. BTW, Room for Children (by Susan Salk) is a great resource for nursery inspiration that's not the traditional matchy-matchy, blue or pink stuff.
my Niece had that same hi-chair :o) .. very stylish! - they have some SUPER stylish baby things now-a-days!

I grew up eating all my meals on this chair... Funny how it's showing up in print now! Mine was pale lacquered wood, very Scandinavian.

Maybe it's just me, but slapping a highchair into a room doesn't make it a kid friendly space! As a Mother of three boys I am always looking for inspirational pictures of spaces that are functional, truly kid friendly and still beautiful.
Gosh! Those are a lot different that the high chairs we grew up with! Love that red one!

I think this is a really important story angle to tackle. I don't have kids yet but when planning on buying stuff for our new house and knowing that kids are likely in the future I struggle with going for what's beautiful and what's practical and trying to find a balance between the two.
I see so many interiors that are just gorgeous, but that I don't think would be altogether practical to live in.
Adorable!x
That high chair is seriously cute, especially in red.
(And I LOVED that apartment!)
The high chair in the picture is the Stokke Tripp Trapp high chair. My husband and I own a small, Boston-based chain of baby stores called Magic Beans and this has been a best-seller for us for years. I've had the opportunity to hear the designer speak, and it was amazing to hear about the simplicity of his idea and the elegance of the execution. It really does work with a wide range of different decors. We have three around our dining room table - one for each of our kids, ages 8, 6 and 2.
Baby friendly style is definitely hard! Sometimes I'm not sure if baby & style can even fit in the same sentence! Any pointers you gather up and post would be lovely to read/see!

Ha, ha! This made me laugh... and as a mother of two, who owns this chair, I needed it! These are lovely rooms and it seems to me that if you are looking for baby friendly and chic... look into Asian influenced contemporary seems to be the way to go. ;) These would make an excellent ad for the chair...which ROCKS btw!
What a lovely idea :-) I am hosting a CSN Giveaway so do stop by, and if you can please spread the word. Thanks a ton Anu
I have that chair too.
I too think baby design has finally come into it's own. Nowadays not everything has to be pink and blue or have some teddy bear stenciled on it. You can find baby stuff to fit any decor.
And not everything has to be brand spanking new either. When my son was born we called his nursery theme "Hearst style Victorian Safari". Except for his crib we furnished the whole room with antiques. We even found him an antique wardrobe with a British newspapers from the 40's still stuffed in one of the drawers.
I think the highchair on the cover of HB was a stroke of editing genius, but I don't know if I'd say the actual home was baby-friendly. Recall that there wasn't even a nursery! How long can this couple expect their child to sleep in a cot next to their bed? I commend families who make the most of living in a small space, but in this case it seemed like they'd unnecessarily sacrificed the comfort of their family for a posh location.
What a wonderful blog you have here!
You have a new follower!

I had not thought of that. You're right there aren't many kid friendly designs in the magazines. I'm loving the red highchair!
The Stokke chairs are wonderful. The nice thing is that they grow with a child (even adults can sit in them) and come in over 10 colors! They can act like a chameleon in any decor. For more stylish child-friendly interiors check out http://www.nurserynotations.com
