Pressured Into Color

White walls often get a bad rap. People feel that unless they put color on their walls it's somehow unfinished, lacking something, and a big design no-no. Well, I beg to differ.
There's something so poignant about a white wall. In all its straightforward glory, its simplicity packs punch and commands attention.
As well, furniture then sings and shines, bringing to prominence its color and silhouette in the purest of ways and without distraction.
Not to mention the soothing effect white brings to our senses through its clean, simplistic nature.

So next time you feel pressured into color, I say don't be. Stand confidently behind your white walls and remember that it's decidedly deliberate and far from just a default.

Happy whitewashed Monday!

Just did our upstairs living area in bold, bright white - with off white trim.

I think it's going to be fab with splashes of color coming from artwork and upholstery.

We also did our last apartment in white on white ~ to a great effect. See: http://picasaweb.google.com/mrsdragoo/ABCDInteriorDesign#

As you can see by my comment on this post, I agree with you about white walls. ;)

I'm glad you mentioned this. I've been agonizing over whether to paint my home office walls or leave them white. The room doubles as a guest room so I want it to be cheerful for guests, but the white walls with the pops of orange and red I've chosen is such a bright spot to work. I don't know if I want to change a thing.

Oh I'm totally bucking the system with some white walls! Shoot, I even like black walls in a kids room! But then again, I'm different like that;-). Great post!

I agree with you, though I think it depends on the white. I grew up in an entirely white-walled house painted in the most depressing white. It was just dreary.
But there's nothing as good as a good white paint.

I bet to differ too. Like you said, white is the purest of ways and without distraction to create. And can't go any wrong with white! ;)

I have always loved white, especially in my bathrooms and bedrooms. Beautiful photgraphs.

I am the biggest proponent of white bare walls and I'm a painter!

You're making me feel very good about my while walls right now. Thanks Crystal! I totally needed that :)

I LOVE white walls. I think people go crazy sometimes with color and it's all looks like a mess. I have a client now with white walls and she is having to force me to add some color. Her apt is super modern, and I love the white on white.

Beautiful pictures! I used to hate white walls until I started seeing so many examples of beautiful interiors with white walls. I love it!

Oh yes! I love white walls... Something so special about the simplicity and then need to not fill with colour!

I love white walls with big bursts of colour, or walls in colour. Either way as long as everything is balanced and suits your personality and the way the house is used I think both are right.

Bravo! I couldn't agree more. It should not be forgotten that white is a color and often very powerful color at that.

Oh I so agree. I often have clients who are surprised when I suggest white or beige walls. They feel cheated somehow. But these clean walls allow everything else to stand out. Do you really want people to notice your WALLS when they walk in or do you want them to notice those things that make this your home i.e. artwork, photographs, color choices etc.

I love what you've written here, Crystal, and couldn't agree more. Everybody thought I was crazy when I re-painted from grey to all white in my bedroom. They said it would be cold, most especially because of my concrete flooring -- but it's not -- a few warm touches make all the difference, just as you have demonstrated here. I love the last picture most of all -- the deep wood pieces just look so at home here.

Thinking of you :)
