Lasting Wisdom from a College Professor

A statement light fixture goes a long way, wouldn't you say? When I put my hand over it and pretend it's not there, the room takes on a completely different vibe for me. With it, it's bohemian chic, without, it's contemporary and ecclectic.

In college I took an architecture class. My professor told me something that has always stuck and that I go back to often when working on a space. He said, "If you want to see how important an element is to the end result of a design, envision it being gone, and then you will see the weight it holds, big or small, and it's true value." Very true, wouldn't you agree?

Excellent point Crystal!

I really like the mix of traditional architecture with modern art and furniture.

Crystal - I have always felt the color in a room comes from those within it. Gorgeous!

yes I agree with that...i can look at a room and see what it needs...people tell me that's a gift...who knows! ciao

I like that it also ties in nicely with the eastern/oriental bamboo panels. This is great advice especially since I currently only have a piece of wire dangling from my ceiling while I make decisions on the eventual light fixture!

Well, Crystal, I covered your blog window on my screen with my hand and my screen looked sad. I like the light!

That is a very good way to teach us all when and how to edit; everywhere.

Edit. Edit. Edit.

I like that idea. I have done that but to hear it articulated so well makes it more a design rule of thumb for me. I know many rooms that will have that one statement piece that without it the room becomes a ho-hum room. I did a post on Big art in which this rule of-thumb applies. Great post! Kathysue

Beautiful images + incredibly wise words!

It is a wonderful thing to do, though, I've never put my finger on it like this, exactly. Keep the great advice come, Crystal :)
