STYLE EPIPHANY

I've had a realization. Perhaps an obvious one, but one I needed to come to in my own time...
You see, I had a little design envy when it came to color and pattern, two areas that don't naturally light my fire. I was intrigued by the designers who could do both with such ease. It looked fun.
So I thought, 'I'll show myself I can do that too,' and vowed to go colorful and bold in my San Francisco apartment. Which I did, and which I love. But, I find myself yearning for white all over again and promising myself that in my next home (I tend to move a lot...) I'll go back to my true roots and first loves: neutrals, earth tones, and textural solids.

Sometimes you have to stray a little and try something totally new to realize that what you already were and what you already loved, is perfectly...YOU.

Have you had any style epiphanies too?

Isn't it odd how tempting it is to bring someone else's style home? My taste is so consistent- why fight it? I'm with you on the neutrals and solids!

Your concept of straying, to then know what is most important, is insightful. At the end of 2011 I toyed with red as an accent in my family room. The second I removed it I felt so much better. Two years ago someone whose design taste I respect very much visited me. She thought my living room color felt too cold. I began to imagine painting it all over again but then I realized her color temperature gauge read cold while mine read fresh and crisp.

Best wishes for a great 2012!

first of all, these spaces are amazing! and, yes, with a brand new space to personalize (and my 20's taste behind me), i'm taking the time to learn what i really want to be surrounded by everyday. you can most certainly appreciate all genres of decor and still have your "home base."

you do bold very well for someone that is a natural neutral, crystal! ox

This dining chairs are stunning. They would make any room sing. I am convinced that we all respond to color differently so it is most important to listen to your own instincts rather than the response of well meaning design friends. Ultimately, it the space you come home to.

I'm the opposite. When I started my apartment design I was going for neutral and restrained and somehow I ended up with bold maximalism. I agree with you that it's good to go with what is YOU, but I also think it's important to push boundaries and re-invent a little. That's how great design happens, right?

I am drawn to light, natural pastel colors as well. Recently, I purchased a new home and I am trying to step out of my comfort zone a little bit and use bold bright colors. Which is a little difficult for me because I am naturally drawn to lighter colors.

I have realised I am happier when I act impulsively, even if it only lasts a little while. I can barely tolerate pattern, which makes it all the more enlivening when I find myself loving one. I enjoy the fourth dimension of time in the things I choose.

I’ve ALWAYS had trouble finding a dining room that I truly love. It’s probably the only room I’m ridiculously picky about. But now I know why… I was waiting for this dining room! The duck egg walls with mouldings and that black armoire and the gold pendant and the chairs!!! Ohh the chairs… It’s love at first sight! That's my style epiphany for today... Great post! :)

I love so many different styles and have moved almost every year of the last six - doing a different look in each one! Keep having epiphanies and changing it up - that's what keeps you inspired and excited!
